How to Layer Plant Your Spring Blooming Bulbs

Written By Shauna Lambeth 21 Oct 2025

A Step-by-Step Guide to Creating a Stunning, Long-Lasting Spring Blooming Display of Flowering Bulbs such as tulips, daffodils, crocus, hyacinth and more.

How to Layer Plant Your Spring Blooming Bulbs

A Step-by-Step Guide

Bulb Selection: First, select three types of spring-blooming bulbs: tulips or daffodils, hyacinths, and crocuses.

Container Selection: Choose a container about 14-16 inches across.

Add Potting Soil: Place a small amount of good-quality potting soil and a sprinkling of bonemeal at the bottom of the container. The soil and bonemeal will provide essential nutrients for your bulbs and promote healthier growth.

First Layer/Bottom Layer: Start by planting the largest bulbs (like tulips or daffodils), the deepest, around 6-8 inches below the surface. Cover them with a layer of soil and a sprinkling of bonemeal.

Second Layer/Middle Layer: Place medium-sized bulbs (such as hyacinths) above the first layer at a 4-5 inch depth. Cover these with another layer of soil and a sprinkling of bonemeal.

Third Layer/Top Layer: Finally, plant the smallest bulbs (like crocuses) at 2-3 inches deep. Add a final layer of soil to cover them completely.

If you like, you can plant pansies between the crocus bulbs for another season of interest.

Water thoroughly after planting to help the bulbs settle in and start the rooting process.

Enjoy your pansies while the bulb roots grow beneath the surface during fall and winter. Come spring, you will enjoy a stunning, multi-layered display of blooms that will bloom in succession.

Happy gardening!
